Vitalistic vs. Mechanistic

There are two perspectives about healing. One is Mechanistic-it defines life as a random series of events, devoid of an organized and intelligent purpose. Sickness is to be treated, symptoms are to be eliminated, and the body needs expert opinions based on human knowledge to help it heal. The other is Vitalistic. It recognizes, respects, and trusts in the intelligence of life and the interconnectedness of this wisdom among all life. Processes of the body are to be trusted, not feared, and an underlying confidence for healing and proper function is emphasized. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, summed up the heart of this perspective well: “Humans are created to be healthy as long as they are whole: body, mind, spirit. People are characterized by self-healing properties that come from within-an innate healing force. Perfect health and harmony is the normal state for all life.”

It is imperative that we define our core values and consciously make our life and health choices from the perspective which resonates best with those values. It is also imperative that we choose practitioners who base their choices on the same foundation.

The majority of the healthcare industry, news media, laws, and regulations do not support the Vitalistic approach. It is hard to go against the grain; those that do are often met with resistance, opposition, and outright criticism, laced with fear and even intimidation. That powerful emotion-fear-then becomes the motivating factor in our decisions. But fear is too unstable an emotion from which to make any good choices. I am reminded of the quote from Bertrand Russell: “Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.”

Max Planck, Nobel Prize–winning physicist and the father of quantum theory, acknowledged this new science well in a 1944 speech: “All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force…. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.”

Since then, and now in the 21st century, the relationship between this emerging science and health is becoming more accepted. Although promoted over 100 years ago by the founder of chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, the recognition and practice of healthcare from an inherent trust of our amalgamation with a greater intelligence is finally being embraced. Deepak Chopra, M.D., sums up this principle well: “There is an inner intelligence in your body, and that inner intelligence is consciousness. It’s the ultimate in supreme genius, which mirrors the wisdom of the universe.”

So when making life decisions, gather the information available in regard to the decision at hand, then put all of it aside and recognize the core of your own beliefs. Once you’ve identified these life principles, weigh your choices from this place of knowing. Choose from a state of trust and conviction consistent with these essential values. They are the connection to your strength. From this place of certainty, you will always choose correctly. For more information, please visit: http://www.thelachiropractor.com/

What is Sciatica Pain?

Sciatica pain is pain in the sciatic nerve, the longest and thickest nerve in the human body. This nerve serves the legs and originates from several levels of the lower back. Formed by multiple nerve roots from the lumbar spine; the sciatic nerve sends signals down the leg to control muscles and up the leg to provide sensations. The sciatic nerve branches into smaller nerves as it travels down the legs providing feeling to your thighs and feet as well.  The term sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of this nerve.  When the nerve is pinched or inflamed, a person can experience severe pain.  Most of the time, what is called a pinched nerve is actually an irritated, or inflamed nerve where the nerve itself is not actually pinched. In most cases, nerves become irritated and inflamed when the bones, joints or muscles of the spine are not in their proper position, or are not moving properly. This condition is called a “subluxation”, the treatment of which is the specialty of the doctor of chiropractic. The “Journal of the American Chiropractic Association” says a substantial number of chiropractic patients complain of sciatica pain. Untreated sciatica can lead to decreased muscle strength, decreased muscle size and problems with walking.  Those of you who have experienced sciatica pain know that it can make life unbearable, uncomfortable and overall joyless.

Sciatica is actually a sign that you have an underlying problem putting pressure on a nerve in your lower back. The most common cause of this nerve compression is a bulging or herniated lumbar disc. Piriformis syndrome is another common cause of sciatica. The piriformis is a muscle that lies directly over the sciatic nerve. If this muscle becomes tight or if you have a spasm in this muscle, it puts pressure directly on the sciatic nerve. Occasionally, sciatic pain in men is caused by sitting on a wallet.

Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the hallmark of sciatica. Sciatica may be accompanied by numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness in the affected leg. This pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort. Sometimes it may feel like a jolt or electric shock. Sciatic pain often starts gradually and intensifies over time.

A spinal adjustment is a type of procedure a chiropractor uses to correct misaligned vertebrae that often contribute to the inflammation and pain caused by sciatica. Chiropractic care is usually centered around spinal adjustments. The patient lies on a special table that can rotate up and down, and the chiropractor applies both strong and gentle thrusts and pressure to the spine. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve and improve spinal function while reducing the pain caused by inflammation.  The vast majority of the time, sciatic pain can be relieved through a combination of stretches, deep tissue massage of the piriformis muscle and chiropractic care. Discover What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation of a joint; most arthritis is caused by degenerative changes related to aging and sometimes injury.  Arthritis affects not only joints but also connective tissue throughout the body can be involved, as well.

Throughout North America, millions of people suffer from various forms of arthritis. Although arthritis encompasses over one hundred different conditions, the most commonly discussed types of arthritis are osteoarthritis (OA) – often referred to as Degenerative Joint Disease or DJD – and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Osteoarthritis, itself, consists of a low-grade inflammation that wears down cartilage and decreases the amount of synovial fluid – substances that cushion and lubricate the joint areas. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is an inflammatory disorder that causes the immune system to attack its own joints. At present, there is no known definitive cause for any type of arthritis.

Unfortunately, one of the common symptoms of all types of arthritis is pain. As a result, individuals with arthritis often seek out chiropractors for natural arthritic pain relief. Considering that the medical community struggles with arthritis pain relief, it isn’t surprising that people are turning to alternative medical procedures. In fact, in the journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, a recent study reported that an astounding 63% of patients seeing a rheumatologist for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia, sought out some type of complementary care and alternative medicine (CAM). Of these individuals, a full 31% visited a chiropractor at least one time – making chiropractic therapy the most popular alternative arthritic pain relief therapy used by this group of individuals. More importantly, 73% of the individuals with arthritis that did seek a chiropractor’s help found chiropractic therapy helpful.

In another report, the US Agency for Health Care Policy and Research stated that chiropractic care is helpful in overcoming acute back pain.

While there is no cure for arthritis, people who suffer from arthritis – in particular osteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) – often possess joints that are subluxated or “locked up” due to cartilage breakdown. The resulting pain occurs when the exposed joint irritates the joint nerves. These irritated nerves may prevent a person from healing in an effective manner. Specific chiropractic techniques can help relieve pain from arthritis by safely correcting the “locked up” or subluxated joints. Also, these regular adjustments can help keep arthritic individuals more mobile and in turn, these manipulations can reduce potential stresses that can cause further discomfort.  Many of my patients over time have experienced substantial pain relief and in some instances complete absence from arthritic pain.

Chiropractors like me utilize a combination of manipulation and other techniques to help provide natural arthritis pain relief. These additional therapies can include: nutritional therapy (to help with pain and inflammation), exercise therapy (to aid with strength and flexibility), soft tissue therapy (to obtain healthier muscle mass), and electrical stimulation therapy (to help with pain management).

As you can clearly see, chiropractors can help to alleviate the pain that unfortunately is all too common among arthritis sufferers. For more information, please visit: http://www.thelachiropractor.com/

Funny Guitar Pictures

Here are some funny or interesting guitar related pictures and cartoons culled from the internet. Ranging from plain goofy or unpractical guitars, to guitar player’s truths expressed in pictures and cartoons, I am sure some of the following sights will brighten your day and raise the “fun” factor on your guitar journey up even higher.

Ain’ that the truth! We guitarists know that is EXACTLY how guitars work!

This would be filed under the category: “Dude, you’re doing it all wrong!”

This goes under the category: “Someone had too much time on their hands”. Stop commenting on people’s flyers and go practice yer geetar.

And how is this one for a great confidence builder…

Always fun to spend some time with someone who has not quite mastered the art of “giving compliments” just yet.

A man’s got to know his priorities. He can’t put it down… he must be really good. “Let’s cheer you folks up with some “Kumbaya” to break the ice. Y’all seem a little tense today.”

Right! Exactly the last song I really want to hear right before I get shot in the head.

Uhmm… yeah… but some of us actually do practice.

Genius joke… let’s “pick” on bass players a bit. (No pun intended)

It’s always good to be prepared: just in case you need to stab the singer in your band after he slept with your girlfriend. Other than that: I can’t really see how this guitar can be very practical. Wonder if airlines would let you take that one as hand luggage?

Wonder where the Les Paul fits in… or… blue guitars for that matter.

Looks like this guy is going surfing after his gig.

WHY?? Why would you want to play a guitar like this?

You should see the strap… haha.

What a great way to piss off your neighbors who live in the apartment under yours.

Had thought of this joke myself years ago. Glad to see someone else thought of this word play and put it into a cartoon.

 We all know this works.

 And another bass player joke…

Very funny and very true indeed.

If you want to have more fun with guitar, or study with a world-class guitar teacher who will occasionally have you in stitches with his fun approach and humorous remarks during your lesson, ZOT Zin Music is where it is all happening.
